It’s that time of year when the leaves start falling, campfires start burning and hot chocolate is a favorite treat. This year make your hot chocolate a little healthier with this recipe. Hot chocolate made with almond milk is overflowing with vein health boosting flavonoids and antioxidants.
Dark, unsweetened cocoa powder is an excellent dietary source of flavonoids such as catechins and procyanidins. A diet rich in flavonoids has been shown to be particularly beneficial for people with varicose veins. However, the flavonoids lose much of their power if cocoa is consumed together with dairy. In order to maximize the health benefits of cocoa, this hot chocolate is made with almond milk instead of cow’s milk.
|5 tbsp brown sugar
3 tbsp dark, unsweetened cocoa powder
2 cups unsweetened almond milk
1/2 tsp vanilla extract
|Combine sugar and cocoa in a small saucepan. Whisk in almond milk.|
|Warm over medium heat, stirring constantly, until hot. Do not boil.|
|Remove from heat and add vanilla. Serve hot.|
